Leadership void; a case for Makueni

Many elites sighed with relieve when Mutula Kilonzo won the senator primaries, mainly because of his influence while the minister for education, for the first time in Kenya a minister taking the same side with the striking teachers and eventually awarding them salary increments and employment to a massive number. A series of changes to the education system occurred, winning students vacations and time to link with their parents, a situation largely blamed for the moral decay among youths and cases of drug abuse. CDF issues in his backyard notwithstanding, Mr. kilonzo is a fair choice.

The gubernatorial seat, on the other hand, received very little attention, in fact zero attention compared to the fuss and noise, both on the ground and on net, accredited to the Nairobi one. We forgot that this seat is as vital (if not more) as the senator one and the person in charge with see to the trickling of funds to the lowest level, and more directly than indirectly, the development take off ( i still believe makueni is in pre-take off stage).

Take one Tom Luusa, for example. If you type his name on the search space yo won't find much about him. A run of governor aspirants in Makueni on the daily nation showed that he was educated in US and Britain, he held senior positions with UNDP, world bank and world vision, majorly as a project manager. Such a profile gets you thinking that this guy is good to put your money on, until you see him some minutes past mid night at club Comfort at Wote(kwa Ngina) hoping from club to club like a newly employed 23-year old guy. He sounds bright and clever when sober, but he lacks in charisma while 'on' several. Someone claimed voting him is like marrying a drunkard.

The other candidates have the prefix prof. in their names. This means they spent some good periods of their lifetime in the libraries( if not laboratories) of this world, and its something worth priding of.

Prof kibwana, for instance, is a well schooled fellow(read very schooled). He has had a stint as an MP in Makueni constituency and the people didn't find much to vote him back for, and he ended up as one of the president advisers  mainly  chosen on personal grounds. He has good lot to spend to woo voters but his managerial know how will come to question. i always believe scholars belong to the book shelves and lecture halls, and this one is no exception.

Prof kaloki. The most charismatic of all the three candidates, soft spoken but very calculative. His egos(as you would expect of some one proven in America) are very high and it attracts rage. A one on one with him gives you the idea of a well connected guy who can bring investors from abroad single handedly but every politician can get you convinced an a table level. Like his fellow prof above, managerial expertise is in question.

It gets me thinking, is this the best group in our county?? Do we have a leadership void, or vacuum?? Are our resources safe??
